Case Study: Online Course Registration
Situation:
The new student orientation registration at the University of Calgary required dozens of coordinated volunteer students working in a gymnasium dealing with long lines of students waiting to register using paper forms.
Solution:
Design, develop and implement a web-based registration application accessible through the campus portal, myUofC. The application allowed students to select and rank options over a period of 2 months. At the end of the cycle, the student choices where locked down allowing administrative staff to set timetables. Once timetables where confirmed, notices were automatically emailed to the new students. Students are able to download and print their calendar from any Web browser. A complete array of statistics where made available to the program director for planning and control of the orientation sessions.
Result:
The successful implementation of the portal application provided new students with convenient 24/7 access to online registration. The system eliminated 130 volunteer hours and the requirement for physical registration. For the first time, the program director was provided with timely statistical reports that monitored the effectiveness of the University of Calgary 101 registration system.
